AHM Recall Honda PCX and ADV160, Indicated Malfunction in CVT Components

 PT Astra Honda Motor (AHM) wrote to several Honda PCX and ADV160 users to check and repair components at the official AHASS workshop. This can be called a recall campaign because AHM found a malfunction in the CVT components of the two scooters.

Several owners of Honda PCX and ADV 160 received a letter from AHM with the theme Product Update. This information was first revealed through uploads on several Facebook community forums. The component repair and replacement activities are effective from September 2022.

The part that needs to be checked and replaced is the Pulley Assy Drive. Indications of this component malfunction are said to have occurred on the Honda PCX and ADV160 because these two scooters indeed pack the same platform.

It is explained if the thickness of the part is uneven due to an imperfect production process. If left in the long term can potentially cause noise (noise) in the CVT area. On the other hand, it can also reduce the decrease in performance of the part.

"To avoid this, consumer calls and replacement of CVT (Pulley Assy Driven) components at official Honda motorcycle workshops are free of charge," wrote AHM via uploading a recall/product update letter to one of the owners of the Honda PCX160.

Related to this, General Manager of Corporate Communication of AHM, Ahmad Muhibbuddin, confirmed that there was information for Honda PCX and ADV160 owners to replace the components in question. He ensures that this is a step to ensure customer satisfaction and comfort.

"That's right, we invited several consumers who own the two models (PCX and ADV160) to AHASS to inspect the Pulley Assy Driven section to ensure the condition of their motorcycles is always in the best condition," said Muhib.

But he said this did not happen to all Honda PCX and ADV160 units. It was explained that there were only a few consumers who were sent to immediately check their vehicles at an official workshop.

"Not all. Only a few consumers are written or texted, or consumers can check independently on the AHM website," he said.

HJC Releases New Sonic The Hedgehog Graphics for the RPHA 11 Series

 HJC Helmet has come up with some pretty eccentric designs over the last few years. The product line up always gives a different feel. An example is in the RPHA 11 unit livery of several DC and Marvel themed super heroes. The latest South Korean helmet brand has released Sonic The Hedgehog graphics.

One of the top helmet brands in the motorcycle industry is now partnering with Sega of America. The collaboration resulted in a unique design, featuring one of the biggest video game icons, Sonic the Hedgehog. This is not the first time that HJC has collaborated with a video game company. Previously, this South Korean brand made work with Activision and produced a helmet with the Call of Duty design.

As we know, Sonic the Hedgehog is the mascot of the video game company Sega Corporation since 1991. Its presence became popular thanks to the Sega Genesis game console. Over the years, Sonic and Sega have spawned countless video game sequels. Even now, there are games based on character toy applications, animated television shows, and action films that are adapted directly from blue animal characters.

Just like other character-themed helmets, Sonic graphics are poured into RPHA 11. The entire shell is dominated by the classic blue color typical of anthropomorphic hedgehogs. So how does the rear CVT component work?

In the CVT transmission there are 3 main components that play an important role in transmitting power to the wheels of the vehicle.

  • Primary Sheave (Drive Pulley)
  • Secondary Sheave (Driven Pulley)
  • V-belt 

The Primary Sheave is located at the front, while the Secondary Sheave is at the back. These two components are connected by a V-belt. These three components determine the amount of output in the form of torque and speed, which are then channeled to the axle and then to the wheels of the vehicle.

The operation of this transmission is by shifting the diameter of the V-belt on both parts of the pulley. When "low gear" or just running, the radius of the drive pulley is small, while the driven pulley is large. Meanwhile, when the "high gear" is the opposite, the radius of the drive pulley increases, the driven pulley decreases.

Regarding Secondary Sheave (Driven Pulley) or secondary Pulley consisting of Secondary Fixed Sheave (fixed secondary pulley), Secondary Sliding Sheave (moving secondary pulley), Secondary Sheave Spring, Secondary Shaft (secondary pole), clutch carrier (centrifugal clutch), clutch housing (clutch housing), cam torque and reduction gear.

Problems that often arise are usually from the clutch housing (bowl), centrifugal clutch lining and secondary sliding sheave.

Symptoms of the clutch housing (clutch housing) is usually a halting acceleration at lower revs. The indication is because the shape of the bowl is no longer flat. So that it is not optimal to bind the clutch lining. This condition could be due to frequent opening of the gas and braking immediately.

Then from the centrifugal clutch lining which starts to wear out. Usually there is a squeaking sound, the acceleration of the motor feels slower both at the lower and upper rounds. Then the secondary sliding sheave which is worn or eroded due to the continuous rotation of the V-Belt. In addition to the rough sound, the symptom caused is that acceleration at mid-speed feels stuck, but returns to normal as the engine speed increases. The habit of hitting the gas cycle can be the cause of this problem.

As we know, in the summons, the reason for Honda to withdraw the PCX160 and ADV160 is due to the potential decrease in face set driven performance and noise (noisy) in the CVT area. The reason is that there is an error in the production process. As stated in the following announcement:

DFSK Parent Company Changes Name to Seres Group

 The success of Seres as one of the EV vehicle brands belonging to the Sokon Group continues to increase, especially in terms of sales in China. This popularity finally decided to change the name Sokon Group to Seres Group and oversee a number of automotive brands DFSK and Seres itself. Currently, Seres has collaborated with Huawei to develop premium electric vehicles in China and several other countries outside China.

Honda Hornet Engine Details Revealed, Use Unicam 755 cc

 Honda has announced that the Hornet is getting an all-new engine. Use the Unicam 8-valve Parallel-Twin 755 cc engine. Kawasaki Partners with Toyota to Develop Hydrogen Engine

 Kawasaki Motors Corp. cooperates with Toyota Motor Corp. The partnership was carried out for the development of a hydrogen engine. While moving forward with the commercialization of green vehicles, Toyota aims to share data and concerns with the motorcycle industry. According to the world's largest automaker, this is a move that is believed to accelerate the development of hydrogen engines for vehicles.

 Toyota has been one of the most pro-active manufacturers with regard to the development of future sustainable alternatives to ICE, including hybrid and electric technologies. And now manufacturers are also forging ahead with innovations in hydrogen power.

While Kawasaki stands out from its competitors for investing in hydrogen technology. It has emphasized its commitment by joining forces with Toyota to pool resources and develop hydrogen engines for future motorcycles.

The deal with Toyota offered Kawasaki many advantages. At least the giant car company is already at a more advanced stage of innovation in the hydrogen field. It has been done since about 30 years ago, thus accelerating development. One example is the Toyota Mirai. The world's first commercially available dedicated hydrogen fuel cell car, of which more than 2,600 units were sold globally.

The deal came earlier this month when Toyota President Akio Toyoda rode a hydrogen Kawasaki ATV at the Mobility Resort Motegi circuit. The hydrogen engine installed is actually for motorcycles and has been developed by Kawasaki Motors Corp - a subsidiary of Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd which is in charge of the motorcycle division. The company develops engines in collaboration with Toyota, Denso Corp and other companies.

"There should be various options for reducing carbon dioxide emissions. I hope the government will support output with technological innovations like this, rather than stopping us with regulation," Toyoda told reporters at the event.

Kawasaki's hydrogen engine is a modified version of the Ninja H2 engine. The company has installed its units in four-wheeled vehicles sold by motorcycle manufacturers in North America and other markets. Other parts and components are the same as those used in the hydrogen-powered Toyota Corolla.

Kawasaki said its company joined the project after being encouraged by Akio Toyoda to work together beyond the boundaries of motorcycles and cars. The design process began in earnest in December 2022.

The company intends to use the technology for motorcycle decarbonization together with Suzuki Motor Corp, Honda Motor Co and Yamaha Motor Co, and other major Japanese motorcycle manufacturers.

Hydrogen Technology

A hydrogen engine burns water instead of gasoline, and no CO2 is emitted except for burning engine oil. Unlike a fuel cell vehicle, it uses electricity generated from hydrogen to drive a motor. The basic structure of hydrogen-engined vehicles is the same as that of gas-powered cars, so Japanese manufacturers can apply the parts and technology they already have.

Toyota's hydrogen-engined vehicle completed the five-hour endurance race held at Motegi from September 3 to 4, 2021. One year has passed since entering the race last May, and vehicle output has surpassed that of gasoline-powered vehicles in the same class year.

“The landscape has definitely changed over the last year. There were difficulties, but now it's clear what we need to do," Toyota Operations Officer Koji Sato told reporters on Sept. 4.

To increase mileage, Toyota is also working on technology to use hydrogen in liquid form rather than gas, as is the case today. The volume of liquid hydrogen is 1/800 of the gas, creating the possibility of loading the tank with more fuel.

Although temperature control and other issues persist, trials of vehicles equipped with the system have been carried out on track, with the aim of participating in the races before the end of the year.
